Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are central to South Africa’s economy, accounting for an estimated 59% of employment. Yet many struggle to grow due to limited access to finance, markets and business support.
Tshipi’s Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programme is designed to create sustainable employment, strengthen local businesses, and drive meaningful B-BBEE performance in the communities surrounding the Tshipi operation.
Enabling inclusive local economic growth
As a B-BBEE (Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment) certified organisation, Tshipi views supplier development as a key lever for inclusive economic transformation. By investing in local Black-owned businesses and integrating them into its supply chain, the company is supporting both its communities and its long-term operational sustainability.
This approach is already delivering results. Between CY24 and November 2025, Tshipi improved its B-BBEE rating from Level 4 to Level 1 accreditation. A targeted Enterprise Development Strategy (ESD)
Tshipi’s ESD strategy focuses on developing Black-owned enterprises within the JTG District Municipality, particularly Exempted Micro Enterprises and Qualifying Small Enterprises with strong growth potential.
Eligible businesses must be formally registered, locally based and willing to participate in structured mentorship and capability development. Suppliers are identified through open calls and transparent evaluation processes, ensuring fair and inclusive procurement opportunities.
Beyond procurement, the programme supports broader development goals, including empowering women-owned businesses and enabling local entrepreneurship that creates jobs and strengthens regional economies.
Local business success
Since 2020, Tshipi has supported several community-based businesses through this model. Two examples demonstrate how targeted supplier investment can drive both economic inclusion and job creation.
Phepha Industries, a 100% Black female-owned enterprise based in Mothibistad, provides industrial cleaning services across multiple sectors.
Through its partnership with Tshipi, the business has strengthened its operational and compliance systems, and expanded its workforce, creating 25 new local jobs. Tshipi has invested approximately R15,6 million (A$ 1 000 000), since 2023, supporting the company’s growth and long-term sustainability.
African Eagle Waste Management, also 100% Black female-owned, delivers waste collection, recycling and disposal services to mining and energy clients.
Tshipi’s partnership with the company has supported its expansion and the acquisition of new operational equipment. Since 2022, Tshipi has invested approximately R8,5 million (A$ 727 600), while also contributing to local employment opportunities.
